Winter Sun Protection Suggestions
Protecting your skin from sun damage requires care and attention year-round, not just during the summer months. Whether you’re taking a beachside vacation or hitting the slopes this winter, overexposure to the sun’s rays can cause premature signs of aging, skin discoloration and even skin cancer. The reflective surfaces of water and snow could, in fact, put you at greater risk of sun damage. Talk to your dermatologist about sun damage prevention and consider some of the protective measures below.
- Select a Sunscreen: While sunscreen is a critical component of sun damage prevention, not all sunscreens are the same. Look for a sunscreen that offers broad spectrum protection, which means it protects against both UVA and UVB rays. Apply sunscreen daily, generously, and frequently to any exposed skin. If you are visiting warmer waters this winter, be wary of tanning oils that claim to offer skin protection as they usually do not have a high enough SPF to prevent sun damage.
- Wear a Wide-Brimmed Hat: A stylish oversized hat is a chic addition to both your summer beach trips and your winter wardrobe. A wide-brimmed hat provides extra shade for your face, neck and shoulders, protecting delicate facial skin from the sun’s harsh rays. Complete your winter sun protection look with a pair of wide sunglasses with UV protection.
- Eat Antioxidant-Rich Foods: The foods you eat could contribute to healthy, resilient skin. Some studies and experts suggest that foods rich in antioxidants, like blueberries, fish, tomatoes and spinach, could help to protect your skin. High-protein foods and healthy fats like almonds and avocados may also be healthy foods for skin.
- Skip the Sun Tanning: Even if the winter weather leaves you feeling pale or pasty, avoid the indoor tanning salons. Embrace your fair skin or purchase a sunless tanner, which can lend a bronze glow without harming your skin. Some sunless tanners may also contain moisturizers and vitamin E for softer skin.
