What Does Your Skin Health Say About Your Overall Health?

Dermatologist Miami

While many skin conditions can be treated by your dermatologist, some symptoms that appear on your skin can indicate the presence of an underlying health condition. Continue reading to discover what your skin might be saying about your overall health.

Dry Skin
Occasional dry skin is nothing unusual and can be caused by dry, windy conditions or excessively hot showers. However, it can also be a symptom of a health issue like dehydration, nutrient deficiencies, diabetes, or hypothyroidism.

Purple Bumps
Have you developed a rash with violet-colored, flat-topped bumps inside your mouth or on your wrists, neck, legs, lower back, or genitals? If so, then your dermatologist may diagnose you with lichen planus. The cause of this condition isn't known, but its presence may be linked with hepatitis C.

Dark Patches
If there are velvety, dark-colored patches on your neck or underarms, then you may have what are called acanthosis nigricans. These patches may indicate that your body is developing a resistance to insulin and can be an early sign of prediabetes.

Scaly Rashes
Necrolytic migratory erythema is a relatively rare condition that is diagnosed most often in older individuals. It is characterized by a scaly, red rash that typically begins at the palms or buttocks and may be accompanied by small skin erosions. This condition is also associated with having a painful, red tongue and can indicate the presence of a pancreatic tumor.

Eye Bags
If you're looking more tired than usual due to eye bags or dark circles, then this is a good indicator that you aren't getting enough sleep. However, if you're receiving plenty of rest and still have this issue, then something that you're eating may be to blame. Consuming lots of salt, for example, can result in water retention and puffy eyes, and allergies can also cause fluid buildup in this area.
