When Is a Sunburn Dangerous?

Dermatologist Florida

Your dermatologist will tell you that protecting your skin from sunburn can be important for preventing skin cancer and premature signs of aging. However, there are more immediate concerns that can be associated with spending too much time in the sun.

Severe sunburns can cause blisters and skin swelling, and you might also experience flu-like symptoms such as headache, nausea, and weakness. You may be able to treat your sunburn at home by staying hydrated, taking nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications, applying cold compresses, and using sunburn creams or gels. However, you should seek medical attention if you experience chills, severe pain, a fever over 102℉, blisters covering more than 20% of your body, or symptoms of dehydration, such as dizziness, fatigue, thirst, dry mouth, and reduced urination.

Wearing an effective sunscreen is one of your best defenses against sun damage and dangerous sunburns. To schedule an appointment with one of the clinical dermatologists at Advanced Dermatology and Cosmetic Surgery or learn about the high-quality sunscreens that we offer, please call (866) 400-3376.
