What Is the Difference Between Blackheads and Whiteheads?

Dermatology Florida

When you visit your dermatologist to seek treatment for acne, you may hear him or her mention whiteheads and blackheads. Both of these are types of acne, but they look different and often require different treatments.

Blackheads and whiteheads are both a type of acne called comedones. They can appear on the face, back, and shoulders, and are often more plentiful than the red pimples that many people associate with acne. Blackheads, which look like small black dots, are open comedones. They are formed with a wider-than-normal follicle filled with sebum, keratin, and dead skin cells. This material then experiences melanin oxidation, which makes it look black. Whiteheads, on the other hand, are closed comedones. The follicles associated with whiteheads are filled with the same materials as blackheads, but thanks to a small opening, melanin oxidation does not occur, so the surface of the comedone looks white.
